The Mother of All Estate Sales, part 1

by Jenny on February 28, 2012

On a Saturday morning back in January, I was happily snuggled up under
my cozy down comforters, half awake-half asleep, contemplating the idea
of getting up but laying there dreaming about how awesome it would be if
my coffee beans suddenly learned how to jump into the grinder and do
their thing. Deliver me a hot cup of coffee, beans! You know how I like
it! A little creme, a little brown sugar in the jumbo Orla Kiely mug with the grey pears!

And then I got a text from my Mom. It went a little something like this:

Big yard sale in your neighborhood – got an email from another listing agent, you should go! Lots of stuff…

It only took about two minutes of laying there before that information jumped into my
treasure hunting heart and THE ENERGY hit. You treasure hunters know
THE ENERGY. It can pull you out of the laziest slump imaginable. Word of
a good sale or an antique show and you’re on fire. It’s that kind of
energy that grabs hold of your insides and says HELLO LAZY HEAD?!?!?! GET UP. GO.
NOW.

And you know I did.

I jumped out of bed, threw on yesterday’s jeans, slipped on my sneakers
and called to Henry across the hall. Henry! Get out of bed, kid! Let’s
go check out this sale together.
Henry’s been been going to sales with me since he was 2 weeks old, so he was game.

It was a 45 second drive around the curve of our block (and a good thing it was, you’ll see why soon… 4 car loads is all I’ll say)

People. THIS SALE. It was advertised as an ordinary old yard sale and it
was anything but. More like an estate sale that was completely catered
to MOI. Upon arrival at the house, there was a little card table set up
in the foyer, and there were a bunch of really friendly 80 year old folks
hanging around a giant box of donuts, chatting it up. As Henry and I
slipped into the living room, I heard the angels singing.

This place had it all. In one of the back bedrooms? CAMERAS AND SEWING
MACHINES. What?! Yes. Just cameras and sewing machines. I picked up a
beautiful brownie hawkeye, a couple polaroids and I debated over a
beautiful blue sewing machine but ultimately ruled it out because,
hello, I almost never make time to sew and I already have three machines
and ridiculous amounts of fabric. Let’s not talk about that… Moving on…

So after I had arms full of vintage aprons and linens, the cameras, and
gobs of dishes from the kitchen (franciscan autumn leaf pattern HELLO?!) and Henry was standing there holding a bunch of things for me, I turned to the friendly 80 year old folks and
I asked this innocent little question:

IS THERE ANYTHING IN THE BASEMENT?

The response? OH YES, HONEY! THE BASEMENT IS OPEN! THERE’S LOTS OF STUFF DOWN THERE!

Jeez, were they not kidding. Vintage iron patio set (for a SONG, we’re talking 15 bucks) and
danish modern style wood desks! Christmas decor! Garden stuff and gobs
of planters! More aprons! Tools! Gadgets! And on and on and on and ON.

And then I came across a big black trash bag. Just sitting there on the
floor, stuffed with stuff and hanging halfway open. A box caught my eye
so I went in to investigate. There were bundles of old bills tied
together with string and rubber bands. And then I pulled out…

My heart. Oh, my heart. I found this scrapbook, chock full of cards from the 1940s and early 1950s and a box of letters and photographs, all belonging to a beauty named ZANE.

Was this stuff really in a trash bag? Yes, it was. In fact, when I took it upstairs and sort of sheepishly said, “uh, I found this stuff… it was in the basement… in a trash bag?” the folks didn’t know what to make of it. “Oh.. yeah… honey? You want that stuff? We were going to get rid of it… how about you just name a price?”

Jeez. Pressure. Thankfully one of the old fellers said, “how about five bucks?”

FIVE. BUCKS.

Five bucks? For this? Sold

I’ll share the rest of this amazing haul with you tomorrow.

When I reached the part with the pic, the USO certificate, the letters, etc., I started crying.

You rescued charmed objects. You rescued a legacy. That is a mitzvah (says the very Protestant southern girl).

I can’t wait to see Part 2! I remember spying some of these pics on your instagram feed back in January!

I think it’s so wonderful that you saved those letters and the scrapbooks. I recently had to save some that my grandma thought no one would want. I think they’re worth saving.

Oh Thank God you found that! Can you imagine if it had been tossed– what a near-tragedy. Now, in a sense, Zane and her story live on. Just too awesome~*

My heart rate sped up just reading about it. These are the sales that make all of the pitiful ones worth the trouble. In the midst of the glory, it takes everything that I have not to panic and I always wish I had eight more arms!

It’s really sad that those things were going to be tossed. I bet those were some of her most treasured items. Do estate sales ever make you sad?

Elizabeth February 28, 2012 at 1:42 pm

I went to an estate sale like that last summer. There were 36 sewing machines in the garage….

So, so glad you were able to save those treasures… most especially her letters and photos. I wrote a post recently, http://bit.ly/ApbLSn, about a house in my neighborhood–the occupant had died, and a ton of his stuff was thrown out in the yard. Overnight. In the rain. It broke my heart!

And WOW!!! That is the stuff of dreams right there. And my god, they were going to throw the very best stuff away! Glad that you asked about the basement.

Kristine February 28, 2012 at 2:42 pm

I am falling over with this haul–the basement ALWAYS, ALWAYS has the best finds! When I’m estate-saling, it’s always the first place that I go!

Okay, last comment. And it looks like she married that same Bernard who wrote the swoony notes to her and they only died six months apart after being married for 62 years… This story has just made my day!

wow! what a truly lucky day and find!….that’s the thing that gets to me the most when i’m in antique stores, i see pictures of families and single peeps, letters and precious memories, and wonder….WHY, why didn’t someone save this or pass it along.. i mean , i guess someone is passing it along when it’s for sale, but it was probably saved from the trash by someone so sweet like you….can’t wait for more of the story

This is a treasure trove! What beautiful memories of someone’s well lived life. I hope you compile all these wonderful paper treasures into a book. A number of years ago I happened on an artist who was giving away all of her belongings as an art thing. I rescued her scrapbook because those are things that are not bought or sold, they are made and they are special and magic. Well done for collecting Zane’s personal, wonderful mementos.

While I was reading this I started getting the anxious feeling you get when you walk into a sale and see that its going to be good. Your heart starts beating fast and your palms start getting sweaty. If you had a shopping cart you would run thru there and start thowing stuff in it. I loved this post because the best part of it is sharing your finds with others. This is an epic haul woman! Thanks for sharing.

Amazing. I love to find/read/treasure things like this. I have tubs of old cards I can’t part with that we have found. They aren’t mine, but they are signed. I sometimes find notes and letters in old cookbooks and recipe boxes. I keep those too. :)

This WAS a mother of a sale. Great find. I love the scrapbook. I’m so happy you were able to dig it out of the “trash.” I can’t wait to hear more about Zane.

I’ve been waiting for this post since I saw the pix on Instagram. SO GOOD! I love Zane!

And those cards are just the best. The Peach absconded with mine which I found under her pillow on day. She said she likes to pet the duckie and his feathers.

You did Zane such a solid in this post. Way to go!!!

Good Lordy Bee! You had me holding my breath the entire post! I felt your thrifty buzz, as I too get the same slightly panicked, frenzied eye scanning, how can I grab it all at one time feeling when you hit a garage/estate sale you will alway’s remember as “The Big One”lol!Congrat’s! Oh and I too have a little man thriftin sidekick who is easily lured by the 50 cent find of the day!
