A Visit From Santa

by Jenny on February 16, 2012

Friends. I think I had a little visit from Santa yesterday. No, I’m totally serious. This week, Dotty has been talking about Santa a lot. One morning she told me she wanted to make a “bed fort” in her room so that Santa could stay there all the time. And the other night she was looking out the window after dinner and she was convinced she saw Santa in the sky. Who am I to argue with that magic, right?

So yesterday, I heard a little whisper from the Thrift Fairy. And we all know, if you get the call, you answer. Fifteen minutes later, I found myself at the thrift. My first find was this 1950s Santa pillow. See? SANTA. I toodled around the store for 20 minutes, hitting up little sections, finding a few things, and then… I decided to check out the kid’s book bin. OH, Friends. Oh my book lovin’ friends. Prepare to have your book lovin’ minds blown…

But wait… I’m not done!

Are you still with me?

I KNOW. I know.

Five minutes, people. FIVE MINUTES! I was finding these books by the handful, 5 and 6 at a time. And completely not even breathing, I don’t think. It was one of those moments where everything around me stood still, I couldn’t hear any of the usual thrift noises, nothing but the sound of a choir of angels singing inside my head. Another one of those moments where I had to go into the dressing room, just to do a little happy jig and have a little giggle to myself.

Thank you, Santa!!!!!!!!!

Jenny, youve got the magic touch! Love the Santa pillow, I found two at a fabric sale (one was sewn, the other just pieces) so I finally made myself stuff and sew them this year before xmas. I didn’t think to add a pom pomn though, must do that.
Also those books are amazing!!!
But I think I am most in love with the nine rabbits one!!

Oh gosh, so funny. Gretchen’s been talking about Santa and Christmas again too. When it snowed a week or two ago she yelled, “Look at da snow! Santa will be so happy!!”

I hate you. In a nice…..reeeeeeeeeeeeally jealous kinda way.
Right that’s it.
You’ve inspired me and I’m hitting the (not so great) uk charity shops tomorrow. I’ll let you know if I come up trumps!

Sarah :)

Can I just say that I *love* your magical thinking? I am a big believer in the existence of some kind of karmic balance in the world, and I love that you demonstrate that so perfectly: good energy out, good energy in! What an awesome thrift haul, thanks to Santa. :)

P.S. The Really Truly Treasure Hunt is my favorite! Can’t wait for my little one to get through the “tear pages out” phase so I can share that book with him.

Are those Little Big Books? According to a dealer at the antique store I work at, they’re worth a loooot.

Ooooh, I wish I was hearing the thrift fairy loud and clear like that! It’s mostly homewares here in New Zealand – including a wooden fruit bowl shaped like a pineapple – but a few darling books would be a great score for the little ladies and gents in my life.

I’m going to Melbourne in a few months for a visit with my boyfriend’s family. His sister is an awesome op-shopper (we call thrift stores “op shops” or “opportunity shops” here) so I am saving up all my good thrifting vibes for one huge day of good luck! Fingers crossed!
