Thrifting is Good

by Jenny on October 13, 2011

Howdy, Friends. Sorry for the radio silence around here. It sort of just happens that way some times, I didn’t plan it but there I went, poof! Life was busy, 3 out of 4 of us were sick and suddenly I haven’t blogged in a week.

I spent a ton of time on the road last week, and put in a TON of miles thrifting, antiquing, junk shopping, flea marketing and estate sale-ing my little heart out. Hands down, best week I’ve ever had in terms of good scores and lucky finds. Thought you might like a peek…

You just know there are treasures to be found in those giant bins they wheel out in the Goodwill. I’ve realized lately that bin hunting has become my favorite. It’s so worth the back ache when you uncover an amazing treasure. And believe me, it is back breaking work leaning over those bins and dig, dig, digging. But call me crazy, I just love it.

This was the first morning that I really hit the jackpot. And it was Monday, so it was bound to be a good week after such a haul, right?! Included in this bunch: an entire collection of 1960s children’s records belonging to a brother/sister pair named Caroline and Elliot, a handful of fab vintage dresses (I’m only keeping ONE), some wool plaid coats for fall, bunches of smalls and this FANTASTIC Vintage Dandilion Library:

So many favorite stories in here and just chock.full. of amazing illustrations. Definitely one of my favorite scores of the week. I can’t wait to sit down and read them with the kiddos. Petunia, I love you, oh yes I do.

Here was my cart on a different morning… and here I am digging in another bin, breaking my back for books. It’s kind of my thing now, and I’m kind of obsessed. Some of you do stretches and yoga in the morning? I like to lean over a 6×6 bin full of books and get my stretching in that way. The reward seems so much sweeter. ;)

Sigh, another day, another great find. This time? It was as if the thrifts said, HEY DOLL. YOU NEED A PRETTY SHELF FOR ALL THOSE BOOKS YOU’VE BEEN WORKING SO HARD FOR. HOW’S ABOUT THIS LOVELY VINTAGE METAL ONE IN CREME? Uh, thanks thrifts. You know me well. I spotted it at the last minute at the Salvation Army, and asked if it was for sale. Lucky for me, it was.

Here is my top score of the week. This incredible aqua and black swirly enamel pot in AMAZING CONDITION. Hello! YEAH. I’m so in love. I’ve seen these before, but never in this condition and never at this price. A quick search on etsy + ebay turned up zero results. I’m either not using the right key words or these are awfully hard to come by…

But wait! Another morning, another visit to the Goodwill. This time I was smacked in the face with this MINT CONDITION Finel Mushroom bowl for… drum roll please… $2.95. TWO-NINETY-FIVE. I swear, the entire room froze around me while I raced in slow, cool motion towards this bowl. Who donates such a thing to the Goodwill?!

By mid-week, I was so happy with all my finds, I had to head into the dressing room to pinch myself. No seriously, I really did.

Couroc trays! Sequined sweaters! Vintage clip on earrings galore!

On Sunday morning, I finished up an already great week by packing my trunk one last time full of treasures. Lots of vintage kid’s books, vintage board games from the 50s + 60s, some beautiful 50s tablecloths, a Doll-E-Crib, and much more…

A couple days of rest and now I’m ready to do it again. ;)

SCORE!!! I have a copy of “I Can Fly”! love the illustration. I want that Bingo gam!!. And yes, I totally agree that the ‘bin-digging-shopping’ is THE BEST. We have a super dirty place called “The Diggers” they have huge card board boxes full of stuff and you dig in them, then pay them by a pound. Only problem is that the boxes are so huge (about 4ft tall) that you can’t reach the bottoms. It’s so gross but worth it when you find good stuff:)

Jenny Mitchell October 13, 2011 at 5:11 pm

i would SO get in that 4 ft deep box! love the name… the diggers, that’s great! ;)

what fantastic scores! those squiggle enamelware pots are super hard to come by. years ago i scored a set still in box on ebay. i paid almost $100 for them but they’re so worth it! there’s a larger/deeper yellow pot, large pink frying pan, small black frying pan, and a much larger aqua soup pot. they are the best for cooking! i mainly use my for when i make fudge or candies…or when guests are over and they want the “50s experience”

Wow- I’m so jealous of all your amazing finds! That bookshelf is incredible. That enamel pan is super rare! I came across a set of two and sold them in my shop awhile back for a good sum. That enamelware bowl would have made my day too!

OMG!!!! I’m hyperventilating over here lady. Books, a 3 dollar bowl!!! Those board games and it looks like your trunk is packed with clothes out the wazoo. Oh my my mama this is fabulous! I’m slightly jealous of you oh so amazing scores. That coat in your top pic too, oh swooon!

Oh! The books, the books, THE BOOKS! That score alone makes my heart go pitter-patter. I grew up with the Dandy Lion Library and only have Open Your Eyes left. Though I did score the Tiny Rooster a couple of years ago. SWOON! Your Goodwill bins are much more exciting than mine. Even though I work at Goodwill, I still don’t get the good stuff as I am not allowed to shop on a day I work. For reals!

And the games? Sigh…so perfect. I would be delighted to find a Pin the Tail on the Donkey in your shop. I have a slight thing for that game.

Thank you for letting me thrift vicariously through you!

Hey there! :)
I showed my amazing fiance this post and he was like “Its too bad she doesn’t live closer, you would be the best of friends and go thrifting, estate sale-ing and flea marketing all the time together!”
And I told him, he was very sweet to say so, but there’s one key problem with that… we would be frantically grabbing the same things while we gasp for air during the adrenaline rush… Its kind of like that feeling you get when you are walking through a thrift store and you see someone with an amazing rare patterned Pyrex bowl, that you wish was in your cart… or a set of the coolest vintage childrens books that have the most amazing vibrant pictures.
I speak from experience. Haha!
Ive literally raced over to the glassware section of my local Salvation before, because I overheard two ladies talking about that most amazing Butterprint Pyrex they scored weeks before. I HAD to beat them to the chase, in case they might snatch more up before I got a chance to grab it. :)
Its a sickness… but I always say, at least my shopping addiction is at thrift stores where most everything is between $1-$3 as opposed to having a Louis Vuitton or Coach purse addiction LOL
ANYWAY,
Congrats on all your thrifting luck! I’m super excited and super jealous :)
Now I MUST go treasure hunting tomorrow! You’ve given me the itch ;)
Xo

Oh, Ash, I totally have the same sickness…but it feels soooo good :)
My husband has given me “permission” to bring home whatever I want while thrifting for vintage because he’s happy I’m not obsessed with the expensive clothes, too. He also loves vintage, so as long as I bring him home something, too, it’s all good :)

Reply

Jenny Mitchell October 18, 2011 at 12:29 pm

oh man. you are so right! a buck or less to a few dollars a pop for something? can’t be beat. and it’s the ultimate form of recycling. one man’s trash is another gal’s treasure!!! :)

do you always thrift alone? that’s my preferred method… the one where i can really just get down to business- and i’m kind of an all business thrifter, prefer not to chat or look up for someone who wants to show me something every 2 minutes, HAH! but ok, occasionally i like to do a little thrifting with a friend, and there would be no wrestling match, i promise!

Happy Thrifting to you! Hope you find some great treasures this week :)

the enamel swirly pot???? the finel mushroom bowl???? holy sheet, mama!!!!!
and the books and games, of course. (that BINGO game looks amazing!)

seriously, our thrifts are so sad these days.
i RARELY find anything old and awesome. and when i do it’s so dang pricey (hello Humpty lamp for $12.99 AND a broken leg!!!).

How fun!!! I can only imagine the high you felt!!!!
HURRAY!!!

LOVING your finds!! Thrifting is totally my favorite thing.. my 2 year old yells out “THRIFTING!” when we pull into my favorite store.

Reply

Jenny Mitchell October 18, 2011 at 12:21 pm

YAY! i love when kids love to hit the thrifts too– henry (10) occasionally groans- like, oh mom not again… but mostly, he’s very familiar with that thrilling feeling that just can’t be beat, when you find something amazing for a buck. like… a HUGE mixed bag of some kid’s entire lego collection, we’re talking: one of those big zip bags that comforters come in? FILLED to the brim with legos. price tag? $1.85. Henry nearly died. best score ever for that lego lovin’ kid. this is what keeps us coming back!!! :)

HAPPY THRIFTING!

OMG Jenny, Next time TAKE ME WITH YOU!

I rarely find good children’s book scores around here. I think people in the Vancouver, BC area hang on to their kids books a little too tightly!

Drooling over your finds. Wow! I love the book set! I scored two things this week. A sweet USA map puzzle from 1965 and a board game. So I was surprised to see you found the same game (Move to the Head of the Class – or some such) Did you try playing it yet? Poor children. The trivia is extremely dated. What was the Lone Ranger’s horse named? What was Sherry Lewis’ puppets named? lol My poor kids

Reply

Jenny Mitchell October 18, 2011 at 12:18 pm

isn’t it so funny! I thought the same thing- henry would have absolutely NO CLUE but it could be fun for us vintage lovin’ adults!!!! i’m sure i could learn a few fun trivia bits from that game… good bits of knowledge to drop at a party, maybe? :)

your map puzzle sounds amazing! happy thrifting!!!!

Oohwhee! Jenny! I’m so happy for you! I was actually cheering with each photo. : )

If you look up “spaghetti ware” or “squiggle ware” on eBay, that should lead you to some more pieces. I won the most amazing huge spaghetti ware bowl once on eBay for cheap and when it arrived, it was in a thousand little spaghetti ware pieces. That was the first and last of my spaghetti ware collection. That stuff doesn’t go for cheap. The term “spaghetti ware” is most often used for those spaghetti type ceramic poodle pieces but sometimes gets used for the pots and dishes too. I’m not sure what they’re *really* supposed to be called. You did grrrrrreat! : )

wow, amazing! i am in love with that bookshelf (and all the books on it). you are so good, tolerating those big goodwill bins. i want to dig through them because i know there are treasures, but my patience thins the deeper i get. i am most patient with the books, because i can at least sort of pile them on one side while i search through the other, handing things to my toddler all the while, keeping him happy. but the clothes, the linens, the bags, forget it. he is on the other side of the store before i’ve looked through the first layer! anyway, i have thrift envy, but i’m glad i get to look at your haul and feel inspired!
