one last hurrah

by Jenny on August 22, 2011

Howdy friends! We’re off enjoying one last little taste of summer at the beach this week… What’s that? School started last week? P’shaw! Truth be told, this has sort of become a bit of a tradition for us… school starts too dang early! But don’t worry about Mister Henry- he brought about a hundred pounds of books, and we’re going to tackle his class + homework every day so that he doesn’t miss a beat. (We just might be doing our reading pooooooolside, ooh la la)

We’re down here on Colington Island in Kill Devil Hills, NC and it is loverly. Even Speck thinks so. :)

Last night we did a little crabbing, and the kids loved it. In case you’ve never done this, I’ll tell you that it involves a chicken neck. I know, all I could think about was my little Butters. I did this a bunch as a kid at my aunt + uncle’s house on the Chesapeake Bay. I can remember sitting on the dock, lowering in my bait + string and watching the little blue crabs come along for a snack.

Look at that beach feast! The newspaper is essential. You cover the table in newspaper, and everyone has a little bowl of melted butter + lemon, and lots of napkins + hand wipes, because this is a messy job, but can it really be beat? NO. The answer is no. I brought a whole bunch of tomatoes + peppers from our garden and fixed up a bunch of fresh salsa, a pot of saffron rice, shrimp, plantains, pinto beans + cheese quesadillas for the kiddos, and hoooooo buddy, those crabs were good. (Apologies to my vegan friends. You know I love you.)

I’ll be back with some updates + photos this week, and I’ve also got some fun posts lined up from a few more sponsors, so be on the lookout for that. No crickets chirping here this week!

Happy Monday, y’all! Have a great week. xoxo

Wow, if my parents would have let us have that tradition, my brother and I would have thought them THE coolest parents on Earth! : ) Y’all have fun!

Crab dinner sounds wonderful! I love that you used newspaper to cover the table, what an awesome idea. Makes me want to go crabbing before summer ends.

So far, we’ve had an excellent week… I think we’ll be able to sneak out before the hurricane hits!

Was the chicken neck bait? Really?

I don’t eat crab but I love catching them and having big crab feasts with my family. We have land crabs here and there are ugly! But apparently tasty….

I sure your kids will never forget these days either…
