crazy good

Brooches1

the thrift gods have been treating me pretty well lately.

CatLabel

i love this funny ceramic cat, which now sits at my desk and holds all my sharpie pens. and the label making kit? i’ve always kinda wanted one of these things, i just didn’t realize how much. i predict lots of label making in my future.

FluffyBirds

i found this gorgeous large wall hanging with fluffy felt birds + flowers for two bucks. it was tucked behind some bad art, just sitting in a dusty corner, waiting for me to find it. when i did, i let out a tiny yelp.

Tablecloths

this week i found these two pretty linen tablecloths, both of which are in excellent condition. plus the two linen tea towels pictured below.

PaintbyNumbers

in the same trip, i picked up two beautiful framed paint by numbers pieces- i just love the fall colors and couldn’t resist them when i saw them. 2.95 each!

but the creme de la creme, the piece de resistance is most definitely this gorgeous teak cabinet i picked up for our dining room.

Cabinet

i really almost felt like i couldn’t breathe when i found it. and would you believe i actually walked away from it at first? actually DROVE HOME WITHOUT IT?! i did. i wasn’t sure if i should get it because, i guess i thought it should have been priced a bit lower- it was at the goodwill, after all. so i went home, and was basically tortured by the thought of it selling to someone other than me. and i thought about it and thought about it. all day long. and when henry home from school, i asked him to pop up there with me and help me make the decision (matty was away all week for work). henry took one look at it and said, “oh mama. your glasses would look so pretty in there, you have to get it!” music to my ears, people. one gentle nudge to close the deal was all i needed. my son knows me so well.

and you know, the truth is, i am spoiled all the time with super cheap lucky finds. i’ve outfitted much of our home + wardrobe with secondhand things. and this piece wasn’t hugely expensive, in fact it was quite reasonable. i’m just so used to nabbing things for next to nothing that i had to think twice about it. in the end, i couldn’t get this thing at target or ikea for what i paid for it from the goodwill. and i know for a fact that i would have kicked myself forEVER if i had let it go.

so there ya have it. and now, i finally have a pretty place for some of my most favorite things.

So do you think if I rubbed my laptop screen some of your thrifting luck will rub off on me!?!?!?! Talk about some major scores, super jealous!

megan! ha! i know it. he is my good buddy, been hitting the tag sales and rummage sales and thrifts right along with me ever since he was about 4 weeks old :)
    he’s got a good eye!!
and “lucky, lucky”- that’s what we have been saying for a couple years now! henry and i will show up at a thrift, and we’ll chant, “1, 2, 3, 4… lucky, lucky!” before going in :)

    Okay, two things:
    1. Your tablecloth collection rivals mine, except mine pours out less elegantly from a bottom cabinet in my kitchen.
    2. I read this post in my reader and came over here to your site to comment on the tablecloths and saw your top image banner. I just took the exact same picture this weekend, of my feet and that wood grain pattern business. Uploading to flickr shortly for proof ;)

jenny, do you have any idea how inspiring you are? i am so impressed with your finds, seeing them reminds me to be persistent at the thrifts (and maybe start chanting. . .) and i love that you asked henry’s opinion! that is great. what a terrific score!

laura!!! thank you!!! yes, the goodies are out there, i think no matter where you are, they are there to be found. it helps that i go A LOT. i have super easy access to a couple shops, which makes it really easy for me to just “pop in” as i like to say. and yes, a little lucky chanting doesn’t hurt!!!

That piece is lovely and looks fantastic in your home so obviously it was meant to be. :)
I once saw this great collection of enamel brooches that someone had hung on their wall and I have always wanted to do that – I just have to start collecting them now.

thank you so much!! i think it was meant to be too. :)
and enamel brooches are pretty easy to find! i don’t ever pay more than $10, and have paid as little as 50 cents. but usually score them in the 4-6 dollar range :)

    Hi Jenny,
I totally understand. Like you, the thrift store gods have been seemingly very kind with me lately, too! I pop in to them a lot, but sometimes the treasures are worth digging for.
For instance, I was at my most favorite store yesterday, happened upon some fantastic things, and then stumbled upon an amazingly large floral-carved framed oval mirror shoved behind a desk in the furniture section. I took one look at it, laid it on top of my cart, and wheeled it around with me for the remainder of the hunt. Then at the check out, I figured that I just didn’t need it at $22, put it back, and drove home without it. Now, I’ve been thinking about it all day; it was so beautiful. It looks like it could be on the wall in Anthro!
So, you’re right, getting a little extra nudge is all you need sometimes. Thank you! I’m going back there tomorrow to get it (hopefully it’ll still be there)!
    xo from DC.
